Our founding story
When vision, innovation, and eye care come together
From the beginning
Ocumeda was founded by an interdisciplinary team consisting of ophthalmologists Prof. Dr. Marcel Menke and Dr. Christian Kirr, along with entrepreneurs Dr. Christoph Haarburger (CTO) and Dr. Benedikt Wiechers (CEO). 'In my daily work, I have repeatedly encountered patients with severe eye diseases that were often diagnosed too late, making vision loss unavoidable,' explains Dr. Christian Kirr. To counteract this, the team developed the Eye Check-Up, which makes eye care quick, affordable, and easily accessible with modern technology. The mission: to prevent vision loss in millions of people.
Our milestones
2019
Foundation of ocumeda by Prof. Marcel Menke and Dr. Christian Kirr – two leading Swiss ophthalmologists
2021
Completion of the founding team with Dr. Benedikt Wiechers (CEO) and Dr. Christoph Haarburger (CTO), who will take over the management. At the same time, we are starting our first pilot projects with Fielmann & BAYER and collecting valuable experiences for the next big step.
2022
We are expanding! The first step takes us to Germany, where we are opening a second location in Munich to reach even more people.
2023
A pivotal year: Together with Fielmann, we are starting a strategic partnership to make the Ocumeda eye check-up accessible to as many people as possible. In addition, PD Dr. Catharina Busch is strengthening our leadership team as Chief Medical Officer. As a special highlight: The largest Swiss health insurance company, CSS, will now cover the costs for our preventive examinations.
2024
We are taking another step forward – Ocumeda is coming to Austria!
Today
What began as a vision is now a reality: over 450 locations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, and more than 100,000 eye check-ups conducted. And this is just the beginning.
