Initiative "Eye Health 70+": mobile and free eye examinations in retirement homes

Mar 27, 2022

With the years, eyesight tends to decline. Often unrecognized eye diseases can additionally impair vision. Eye care is the best prerequisite for effective and timely treatment to maintain long-term vision. With the financial support of Bayer (Switzerland) AG, Ocumeda offers mobile eye check-ups for seniors. Free of charge and directly in retirement homes.

As people age, there can be a change in visual ability. According to a study in Swiss nursing homes, 50% of the residents of retirement homes neglect the recommended rhythm of eye care. The consequence: a large part of vision loss could have been avoided with proper care. For this reason, Ocumeda has launched the initiative "Eye Health 70+": with the financial support of Bayer (Switzerland) AG, 2000 eye check-ups will be made available free of charge in nursing homes to actively contribute to the preservation of vision and the prevention of eye diseases directly in nursing homes.

The eye check-ups in local nursing homes are well received. Ms. Sandra Rhiner, Head of Care and Nursing at the Mösli Center in Utzenstorf: “The eye check-ups were very well received by our residents and their relatives. It saves the often laborious journey and logistics for preventive examinations – a significant reason why preventive care is often neglected.”

The service offers a comprehensive eye check-up. Here, two strong areas of expertise are combined: the competence of specialists in ophthalmology and the services of highly qualified opticians.

  1. The eye check-up is a competence of the Swiss Ocumeda AG. The eyes are examined for eye diseases using the latest measuring devices. Trained specialists in ophthalmology evaluate the recorded results online and formulate easily understandable findings for seniors. In the case of abnormalities, treatment can be initiated in a timely manner.

  2. The optometric eye check-ups are carried out by trained and certified professionals. The eyes are examined for visual performance, refractive errors, and presbyopia.

The mobile bundled offer combines many advantages: the eye check-ups are free of charge and conveniently conducted in retirement homes. The service is provided by qualified opticians and specialists in ophthalmology. “It is important for us to emphasize that in case of abnormalities, aftercare is conducted neutrally and independently by local ophthalmologists,” Dr. Jörg-Christian Kirr, specialist in ophthalmology and founder of Ocumeda AG.

The offer is aimed at seniors aged 70 and above. Interested retirement homes and senior facilities in Switzerland that wish to participate in the free initiative can contact our project manager: by email info@ocumeda.com or by phone at: 031 528 11 23.
